Separate control from forwarding
Software-defined networking separates policy and control from the forwarding behaviour of network devices. Automation is useful when intent, validation and rollback are explicit.
- Keep configurations in version control.
- Validate an intended change before applying it.
- Use small rollouts and verify observed behaviour.
- Keep an independent management and recovery path.
Move applications closer, thoughtfully
Edge computing places workloads closer to users or devices. This can reduce some network delay, while adding operational work across more locations.
- Measure the whole request path before moving a workload.
- Plan local failure modes and loss of upstream connectivity.
- Limit stored sensitive data and manage updates consistently.
- Mobile and wireless performance depends on coverage, load and deployment conditions.
Treat the service network as infrastructure
Containers and service meshes introduce another set of addresses, routes and policies. A mesh may provide application-level transport security and traffic controls, but adds operational complexity.
- Map the underlay, overlay and application paths separately.
- Observe service DNS and endpoint discovery.
- Test network policies rather than assuming isolation.
- Evaluate emerging technologies through reproducible experiments, not adoption predictions.
